Women in the workplace are vital to the nation’s economic security.  The era of perceiving women only as home-makers is fast giving way globally.  Many women occupy important and responsible positions in their chosen careers.  In recent times, we have witnessed women taking on high-level positions in the banking, political, medical, legal, and other critical sectors of the economy both locally and internationally. 


Fundamentally, the Nigerian woman is gradually stepping in to take her rightful place in the workplace, which deserves the support and encouragement of the leadership of public and private organizations. 


Many contemporary organizations and governments all over the globe are beginning to realize the importance of women in the achievement of set objectives.  NDIC is not left out.


The Deposit Insurance Scheme (DIS) implemented by NDIC was designed as a Risk Minimizer with the following mandate:

(a) Deposit guarantee;

(b) Bank supervision;

(c)  Distress resolution; and

(d) Bank liquidation.


To assist the Corporation in achieving this mandate, Corporate Mission, Vision and Core Values have been developed.    Our core values are broken down into four areas, namely:

(i)     Professionalism

(ii)    Transparency

(iii)   Team work

(iv)   Respect and Fairness


Management has always been guided in its actions to assure that the principles of respect, fairness, gender equity, equal opportunity, good corporate governance, inclusion and diversity are upheld in the Corporation. 


Bearing in mind one of our core values of respect and fairness, this parley, the first of its kind in the history of the Corporation, is intended to achieve the following objectives:


  1. Sensitize participants on the attributes needed for career growth in NDIC;
  2. Highlight role of women in the development of society;
  3. Discuss involvement of women in community service/poverty alleviation/sustainability of the environment; and
  4. Understand the importance of work-life balance.


Accomplished women in different areas of endeavor have been carefully selected to present papers in these areas.  While three will be presenting at this session, three others will present in the second session to be held in Lagos in due course.  Soft copies of papers presented at both events will be made available to all participants after the event. 


Over the years, we have seen a wide gap between male and female presence in the workplace.  In NDIC, as at August 2013, approximately 27% of the total workforce is female. The gap becomes even wider in the Executive cadre.   As at the same time, only 8.2% of the Executive members of staff are female.  This figure was much lower before recent recruitments in the Corporation which commenced in August 2010.  The recruitment exercise was concluded with a ratio of 70:30 between males and females respectively.  This is the highest number of female intake in the history of the Corporation and the pace will be deliberately enhanced whenever the need arises to conduct recruitment in the future.  Similarly, we envisage that more capable female staff will rise to executive positions in the nearest future in the Corporation as many of them are being properly groomed for higher responsibilities. 


The purpose of our gathering here today is to discuss challenges that might hinder female employees of NDIC from attaining their career aspirations as well as to explore how to maximize their potential, enhance their productivity and commitment.  It is also our intention to collectively determine needed steps to address the challenges.  


We are aware that globally, women face numerous challenges in the workplace which tend to make it difficult for them to achieve their career aspirations.  These challenges range from sexual harassment to other gender-based discriminatory practices.  Happily, we have not recorded any significant occurrence of these kinds of unhealthy practices in NDIC. Management has taken cognizance of these issues and has articulated robust Code of Conduct and Culture Handbooks to mitigate these unwholesome practices.  I urge every female employee of NDIC to acquaint themselves with these handbooks (which can be downloaded from NDIC portal) and seek redress through appropriate channels when these career-inhibiting practices are observed.  Furthermore, our deployment policy protects female employees in order to preserve conjugal harmony and cohesion. 


The Management of NDIC is committed to providing necessary support to our female employees to ensure that they achieve their career aspirations.  We, however, expect our female employees to continue to develop themselves, sharpen their skills and exhibit a sense of commitment and diligence which women are traditionally known for. 


We have in our midst accomplished women from outside of NDIC.  Some of them will be sharing with us insight on their career journey with a view to encouraging us to strive for excellence.


I urge you to pay attention and assimilate all the experiences that will be shared during this interactive session.  Ask pertinent questions that will assist you in your career advancement.  Work hard, focus and deliver solid results.  Be open to opportunities and continuously develop yourselves.


I want to personally appreciate all invited facilitators, Heads of Department of NDIC, Ag.
